What is Herringbone Flooring?

A herringbone pattern is an arrangement of rectangles used as a flooring pattern, named for a resemblance to fish bones, such as a herring.

These patterns can take the form of interlocking rectangle or more rarely, other interlocking parallelograms. Herringbone patterns are more commonly found on wallpaper or mosaics but have been popular as a flooring design for thousands of years. The pattern was often used by the ancient Romans to make more structurally stable roads. The same principles also apply to indoor flooring.
